Everyone loves to gush how smart their dogs are. Potential dog owners dream of owning a smart dog that can learn commands on the fly and is smart as a whip. Dumb dog owners lament and diss their dog.

Not me, I love my dumb dog. I have four dogs, and one has two brain cells that are running half capacity. One of my dogs is smart enough to have human illnesses like anxiety and depression, combined with being smart enough to open round doorknobs, and the interior locking mechanism of my truck topper? She has better mental health care than I do.

My other smart dog needs hours of mental stimulation. She knows the name of all of her toys, so I need to hide them and make her find the right one. I need to feed her in such a way that she can pretend that she's hunting/sniff work. I make her pull me on skis for 10 miles so that she feels gainfully employed. There's no such thing as bad weather in her opinion.

My dummy though? Give her a biscuit and a warm spot on the couch and she's golden. She wants nothing more than a full belly that's being rubbed. She can't figure out how to escape any containment, including stepping over a 4" barrier that is shorter than her legs. She just accepts her fate and enjoys the puzzle that I leave her in her kennel. She might

not be able to figure out how puzzles are supposed to work, but she can suck the food out with her tongue like an anteater. She's sweet, and lovey dovey and always happy. She still enjoys playing and running around and looooves tennis balls. But she is also down for a day to just hangout at home and snooze.

I tried forcing her to be smart. I tried skiing with her, but she couldn't figure out how to not get run over. I try having her do nose work and puzzle feeding, but she gets frustrated when she can't figure it out, it's not fun for her. So we just hangout at our farm and she grazes on grass and digs for tubers and roots, happy as a pig in mud.

My fourth dog has nothing wrong with him except for the occasional weird health issue. He's the perfect combination of trainable and easily content and athletic.

holybatjunk 1 yr. ago • Ernie - Wondermutt Disc Dog I think smart, working breed dogs are walking proof that intelligence doesn't make you inherently happier and probably actually does make you significantly more neurotic. Mine solves puzzles, escapes anything, STEALS what he wants like a pro--this involves so much social intelligence because the humans need to be distracted!-- and he's just one of the smartest dogs I've ever met. He's also definitely moody, plays favorites with people and thing

to an insanely high degree. he's willful and I love him more than I've loved anything in my life but BOY HOWDY he takes a LOT of stimulus or he makes his own enrichment opportunities. There are no days off with a smart dog. If they're not being a pain in the ass it's only because they're sick and that is definitely NOT a day off. There are times when I envy my friends with two brain cell dogs. But then again, I am also prone to flopping around in fits of despair if I'm bored, so I feel like my d

Crazyboutdogs. 1 yr. ago Gorging German Shepherd People always think I'm crazy when I say I like bad dumb dogs. They really are the best. I have a GSD now that inherited none of the intelligence the breed normally gets. He is AMAZING. He still has all of the drive and playful of a GSD, but will repeatedly run into a closed door. He is sweet and kind and total idiot.

horriblegoose_ • 1 yr. ago My stupid dog is one of my favorite creatures. She's that perfect combination of dumb and lazy. I joke and say she's basically a throw pillow that needs to eat. You can just look into her eyes and it's apparent that absolutely nothing is going on in her head. She's 8 and has proven incapable of learning a command as simple as sit. Sweet girl is completely happy laying around all day and never causing trouble.

Tough_Stretch · 1 yr. ago I feel you. Smart dogs are awesome, but dumb dogs are a different kind of awesome. It immediately reminded me of that scene in the old Simpsons episode where Bart takes his dog to obedience school and he fails because he isn't smart enough to learn the tricks, so Homer and Marge are going to give the dog away because he always misbehaves and they urge Bart to just spend their

last day together having fun in their backyard. At some point there's a shot of the dog's head and he's really happy, tongue out and tail wagging, and Bart throws a frisbee at him but instead of catching it he just stands there with the same expression before and after the frisbee literally bounces off his face. He doesn't even blink. I always thought that perfectly captured the essence of a dumb dog. My family had a dog just like that years ago. He wasn't sharp but he was really, really happy a

SparkyDogPants OP 1 yr. ago My dumb dog is so much happier on average. She isn't smart enough to have separation anxiety. Her issues were when i tried to force her into a smart dog role. She would get confused and frustrated. She just wants to cuddle and eat whatever i put in front of her. Why be upset about being left alone when it means that you get to eat peanut butter uninterrupted in a kennel with no competition from other dogs?

mltain 1 yr. ago . Your dumb dog is the smartest one. Does none of the work, gets the same amount love, attention, food and treats as the others

krukson 1 yr. ago I also have a goofball that can't figure out even the simplest entry level puzzles. He will try to lick his way in, and if it doesn't work, he will come to me for help. He's a very good boy, though.
